It's Not Cultural Appropriation

Project Type

Half scale Costume

Location

London

Inspired by the Western opera "Turandot". This version of Turandot is full of Westerners' misinterpretation of the East. All the Eastern cultural output of that era came from Marco Polo's travels, so the original costumes did not truly absorb Chinese aesthetics. At its core, it also mixes elements from China, Japan, South Korea and India.
So I designed this collection of clothing starting from "stereotypes". The purpose is to be satirical.

The story of Turandot itself is set in the Yuan Dynasty, so the silhouette of my clothing comes from the Mongolian people. To make the outfit look "childish" I used primary colors. Laser cutting technology was also used to cut the patterns. In the end, these Chinese patterns gave a sense of planeness, which well explained my concept: the oriental elements in the Turandot opera costumes are very superficial. The whole project looks very much like a kindergarten report performance.

But regardless of the accuracy of historical and cultural factors, Puccini's aria is still worth listening to, and "Jasmine" runs through the entire song, making Turandot still very oriental in terms of listening.
