The Witch from Indian tale
Project Type
Costume
Inspiration
Since it is a dance costume for a designated role, the skirt is inspired by a folk dance in northern India.
The surface of the costume is all black and white, and some patterns and copper ornaments indicate her identity as a witch. But when she dances and spins, the pink colour unique to Gulabi underneath gradually emerges, forming a huge contrast with the surface. The meaning of this dance is to convey to the audience "Don't be afraid, we are here"

The work is set in India, one of the country's poorest regions, characterized by a deeply patriarchal culture, strict caste divisions, female illiteracy, domestic violence, child labour, child marriage and dowry requirements. So a pink group emerged, a women's group often called the Gulabi or "pink" gang because the members wore bright pink saris and waved bamboo sticks. The original intention was to punish abusive husbands, fathers and brothers, and to combat domestic violence and abandonment. The founder of the gang said, "Because of the police's inaction, such a group came into being. We are not a gang in the usual sense, we are a righteous gang."
